Why Butler

Samuel Butler's 1900 translation is public domain and practical. It moves quickly, reads clearly, and gives us a legal base for an original digital edition. Butler uses Roman names - Ulysses for Odysseus, Minerva for Athena, Neptune for Poseidon - so our glossary and notes quietly translate the naming system back for modern readers.

Modern translations by Wilson, Fagles, Fitzgerald, Lattimore, and others are treated as recommendations and comparisons, not as text we reprint. The Home Pack gives you Butler as the complete reading copy, and points you honestly toward other editions when they are the better fit.

The source discipline

The edition work starts with the poem itself. Claims are checked against the 24-book structure and primary text. Open resources such as Perseus, Scaife/Open Greek and Latin, and Dickinson College Commentaries help with verification. Commercial scholarship and Loeb/OCT-style editions are research supports, not text we republish.

That distinction matters. Dickinson College Commentaries is useful and open, but its CC BY-SA license is not something we fold into a paid book by accident. DCC can verify and inspire; our paid text remains our own writing.

For the film

You can walk into the 2026 film with no preparation and still enjoy the spectacle. But the poem changes what you see: why Odysseus hides his name, why Penelope is not merely waiting, why the return becomes more dangerous after Ithaca, and why the final recognitions matter as much as the monsters.
