The honest reading math
The Odysseyis 24 books totalling roughly 12,000 lines. In a modern translation that is about 10 to 14 hours for most adults; an average book takes 25 to 40 minutes. Two things slow readers down more than the sentences: the opening four books follow Telemachus, not Odysseus (don’t stall — the adventure grips at Book 9), and a denser verse translation reads slower than a fluent modern one.
The seven-day plan
| Day | Books | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Books 1-3 | A house under siege: the suitors; Telemachus sets out to find news of his father. |
| 2 | Books 4-6 | Sparta and Helen; Calypso is ordered to free Odysseus; shipwreck, and a stranger washes ashore. |
| 3 | Books 7-9 | The Phaeacian court; Odysseus names himself and begins his tale - the Lotus-eaters, the Cyclops. |
| 4 | Books 10-12 | Circe, the land of the dead, the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, the cattle of the Sun. |
| 5 | Books 13-16 | Ithaca at last, in disguise; the swineherd's hut; father and son reunited. |
| 6 | Books 17-20 | A beggar in his own palace; the old dog Argos; Penelope; the scar; the night before. |
| 7 | Books 21-24 | The contest of the bow; the reckoning; the marriage bed; an old man in an orchard. |
Prefer a gentler pace? The fourteen-day version runs the same order at one or two books a sitting. For the full breakdown, see can you read the Odyssey before July 17?
Questions people ask
How long does it take to read the Odyssey?
About 10 to 14 hours for most adults in a modern translation - the length of a substantial novel, not a semester. It is 24 books, each roughly 25 to 40 minutes. An hour a day finishes it in about two weeks; 90 minutes to two hours a day, in a single week.
Can I read the Odyssey in a week?
Yes. At about 90 minutes to two hours a day you can read all 24 books in seven days. If that is too much, read the spine - Books 1, 5-6, 9-12, 19, and 21-23 - in about six to seven hours and skim the rest.
What is the fastest way to read the Odyssey?
Choose a fluent modern translation (Emily Wilson's reads fastest of the verse versions; Samuel Butler's free prose moves fastest of all), read it in the 24-book chunks Homer wrote, and do not stall in the first four books - the adventure grips at Book 9.
Do I need to read the Odyssey before the 2026 film?
No - the film stands on its own. But the poem is short enough to read in a week, and knowing it changes what you watched: which episodes the adaptation kept, what it compressed, and what its ending was allowed to mean. Reading it after the film works just as well.
