Why The Odyssey Was Shot on IMAX Film
The short answer
The Odyssey is the first theatrical release shot entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras. Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema used 2.1 million feet of IMAX film and helped develop the quieter next-generation Keighley camera and sound blimp. The system let the production combine vast landscapes, action, and synchronized dialogue while keeping the physical presence of large-format film.

The Odyssey did not merely include selected IMAX sequences. Every frame was captured with IMAX film cameras, making it the first theatrical release shot entirely in the format. IMAX says Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema exposed 2.1 million feet of film during production.
What 2.1 million feet means
That figure describes film stock exposed during production, not the length of the release print or a simple conversion of the 172-minute runtime. A production records multiple takes, camera tests, alternate performances, inserts, and material that never enters the final edit. The number is useful because it conveys the physical scale of an all-film workflow: every attempt consumes, handles, processes, and scans real large-format negative.
It should therefore be read as a production measure, not as evidence that the finished film contains a particular number of scenes or that one location required more footage than another.
What "shot on" means
Capture is the stage at which images are recorded. IMAX 70mm film runs horizontally through the camera, giving each frame a much larger image area than conventional vertical 35mm. That supports detailed large-scale photography and the expanded 1.43:1 presentation available at IMAX 70mm locations.
The scale creates a practical problem: traditional IMAX film cameras are large and noisy. For this production, IMAX and the filmmakers developed the Keighley, a next-generation film camera named for David and Patricia Keighley, plus a compatible sound blimp. The engineering made synchronized dialogue more workable without abandoning the film negative.
Capture is not projection
A photographed image can still be prepared for several kinds of exhibition. Entirely IMAX capture does not guarantee that every audience sees a physical print, a 1.43:1 screen, or a uniform presentation at every cinema.

Why the choice may suit Homer
Homer's poem repeatedly changes scale. It moves from open sea to a crowded hall, from monstrous bodies to a scar, from years of absence to a private sign shared by two people. Distance matters, but so do faces, thresholds, beds, bows, ships, and the physical recognition of home.
Large-format photography matches that range unusually well. The sea can make a person appear small; a face, scar, bow, or threshold can make recognition feel monumental. The technical choice is therefore not only about spectacle. It lets bodies and landscapes occupy the same visual argument.
What the format does not guarantee
The camera format cannot predict the operation, seating, sound, sightline, or projection medium of your showtime. A digital IMAX presentation and an IMAX 70mm print begin from the same photographed material but deliver it through different systems.
